Last Sunday , NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo went on a fishing trip off the South Shore of Long Island and managed to hook and land a decent 154 pound thresher shark. While this is not unusual to land and then keep the shark for dinner, which is entirely legal, it is another thing to be a politician and post it on social media leaving yourself exposed to the criticism from conservationists. And did they fire some “green” barbs – like this:
“Lost for words. Governor of New York State Andrew Cuomo kills an IUCNRedList threatened thresher shark for fun.”
“You’re a real piece of trash boasting about killing a shark listed as vulnerable on the Conserv. List!”
“Hey @OCEARCH perhaps if you’re still in town we can educate our fine [governor] on threatened marine species.
It’s also not the first time Cuomo has gone shark fishing locally – last month he and his brother hooked and landed a 9ft hammhead though that one was released.
“This is an edible game fish that is indigenous to New York waters and catching them is allowable under both state and federal regulations,” Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi said in a statement, according to the New York Post and Poughkeepsie Journal.
